Latium (Lazio in Italian) is a region of central Italy, bordered by Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It comprises 5 provinces: Rome, Viterbo, Latina, Frosinone and Rieti. Regional capital is Rome. The name of the region also survives in the tribal designation of the ancient population of Latins, from whom the Romans originated.

Latium has great importance for history, art, architecture, archaeology, religion, and culture in general. The immense patrimony of the city of Rome forms only a part of the treasures spread over the hundreds of towns, villages, abbeys, churches, monuments, and other sites of the region.

Main Cities :

Latina:

Former Littoria fascist town of was founded in 1932 in the centre of the Agro Pontino, was then renamed Latina after 1945. The city is a typical example of rationalist architecture, designed by the architect Oriolo Frezzotti to Fascist canons. In the surrounding: long beach on the Tyrrhenian coastline known as the Lido di Latina

Frosinone:

Frosinone (in Italian, Provincia di Frosinone) is a province in the Latium region of Italy, with 91 comuni. Its capital is the city of Frosinone. It has an area of 3,244 km², and a total population of 484,566

The Province was established by Royal Decree on 6 December 1926 with territories belonging to Lazio and to Campania. At the same time the Province of Latina (originary called Littoria) was also established. The Campania areas were the left valley of the Liri-Garigliano river, the district of Sora, the Comino valley, the district of Cassino, the Gulf of Formia and Gaeta, the Pontine isles, which until then had been for centuries included in the Province called Terra di Lavoro, of the Kingdom of Naples (or of the Two Sicilies)

Rieti:

Unblemished nature, green hills, vast expanses of deep green woods and forests, majestic snow topped peaks, limpid rivers and silver lakes: this is the province of Rieti, naturally captivating. The territory is fascinating, an oasis of wild beauty that has kept itself intact over the centuries: from the Franciscan Sanctuaries filled with mysticism, to the castles; from the villages that tell of their ancient cultural heritage and traditions which have never been abandoned, to the boundless expanse of olive groves; to the now gentle, now steep slopes of the inaccessible mountains. The ski station in Terminillo, with its sports facilities, together with numerous cultural eventi and the gastronomy of this land, insure a pleasant stay under the banner of well being and recreation.

Viterbo:

Viterbo is a comune (township) in the Lazio region of central Italy, and the capital of Viterbo province, It is approximately 100 kilometers (60 mi) north of Rome.It was once presumed to have been founded by Etruscans, but the source of this belief, still not eradicated from the popular mind, was the work of one of its more colorful natives, a medieval forger named Annio. Its main claim to fame is as "the town of the Popes": the Popes had a country residence there, which may still be seen; and it thus became the site of important church councils, and in particular of the first conclave. Its beautiful historical center was conceived in the Middle Ages and preserves the essential style of the medieval architecture of central Italy, with many "palazzi". The town hosts the Italian gold reserves, an important Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Tuscia and a wide thermal area. In 2001 the School Year Abroad program founded a program for high school students in Viterbo, and the program is now in its fourth year. The program places students in host families in the surronding areas and has a school in the center of the city.

The "Macchina di Santa Rosa" The transport of the Macchina di S. Rosa takes place every year, on September 3, at 9 o'clock in the evening. The Macchina is an artistic illuminated bell-tower with an imposing height of 30 m. It weighs between 3.5 and 5 tonnes and is made of iron, wood and papier-mâché. At the top of the tower, the statue of the Patron Saint is enthusiastically acclaimed by the people in the streets of the town centre, where lights are turned off for the occasion. One hundred Viterbesi men (known as the Facchini) carry the Macchina from Porta Romana through the major streets of Viterbo, concluding with a strenuous ascension up to the Piazza di Santa Rosa, its final resting place. Each Macchina has a life span of five years, after which a new one is built
